A former United States ambassador to Romania with private practice experience has joined DLA Piper’s New York real estate division as of counsel.
Former United States ambassador to Romania and a former partner at Seyfarth Shaw, Adrian Zuckerman, “brings a background of impressive public service” to DLA Piper’s New York real estate practice, according to a statement by co-US managing partner Richard Chesley, who added: “His addition will strengthen our global platform and ability to provide nuanced and sophisticated advice to clients across the globe.”
In the past year as US ambassador, Zuckerman played a key role in furthering US-Romania relations. While he was in this role, Romania and the US signed a 10-year defence co-operation agreement and an intergovernmental contract for the construction of two nuclear reactors and the refurbishment of one, the biggest ever joint project between the two countries.
While Zuckerman was acting as ambassador, Romania also implemented initiatives to fight organised crime, fraud, corruption, human trafficking and theft of intellectual property, among others. At Seyfarth, he handled commercial lending transactions and disputes in the retail, office, lodging, office and industrial spaces, for real estate owners and developers, as well as companies.
The chair of DLA Piper’s US real estate division and co-chair of the global real estate practice John Sullivan emphasised Zuckerman’s “unique combination of diplomatic and legal experience”, which will improve the firm’s “ability to act as a trusted adviser to… clients and to help them take advantage of opportunities throughout the world”.
Jenner & Block recruited David Pressman, a former ambassador, into its New York crisis management and litigation practice, in June last year. He made the move from Boies Schiller Flexner.
In August last year, Germany’s former ambassador to Benin, Zimbabwe and Uganda joined Dentons as of counsel with a remit to advise German investors on Africa.
