Greely High School again named top school in Maine in U.S. News rankings

May 24, 2021 by Staff Reporter

Greely High School in Cumberland has again been named the top high school in the state, according to the 2021 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

Following Greely, U.S. News ranked Kennebunk High School, Falmouth High School, Cape Elizabeth High School and Baxter Academy for Technology and Science, a charter school in Portland, in the top five.

Rounding out the top 10 were: South Aroostook High School, Belfast Area High School, Madawaska Middle and High School, Camden Hills Regional High School and Easton Junior-Senior High School.

The rankings, released in late April, are based on college readiness; reading and math proficiency and performance as indicated on state assessments; underserved student performance; college curriculum breadth; and graduation rates. College readiness specifically measures participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

Greely, part of School Administrative District 51, was also named Maine’s top high school by U.S. News in 2020. The school serves students in Cumberland and North Yarmouth.

U.S. News & World Report ranked approximately 17,860 public high schools out of the nearly 24,000 reviewed this year. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a magnet school in Virginia, was named the nation’s top high school.
